Identifying with excellence in communication is the watchword of Nigeria's First Premier Monotechnic of Communication, the Nigerian Institute of Journalism. As the institute is poised in making available materials and resources that will prompt a communication-oriented student in gaining and learning on full grounds of the media world; it is also an environment that should allow students who are dreaming of becoming big in the journalism profession explore their talents and make good use of them.
Educational oriented environment is basically centred on if the educational environment is truly fulfilling its major cause for establishment. An example is a typical engineering school, established mainly to tutor and produce prospective engineers and its duly following the course.
It has come to a time whereby the journalism profession can make do with the society serving as a means of giving voice to the voiceless through a free for all medium that is the social media. So having an iota of knowledge of what the media practice is like professionally, it is an edge for those in the practice.
Although, the institute offers a variety of coursework with well acknowledged professional lecturers, it is still yet expected to provide young prospective journalists.
Speaking with quite a number of students, majority ascertained that it is educational oriented further adding that it is an institute of professionalism and they've also got that positive perception they will make it with the communication institute's help.
According to a National Diploma III (Part-time) student, Dayo Button, "when we say educational orientation for communication, NIJ is the best place to be, nowhere else. As far as I'm concerned, for someone to have a broad knowledge and become successful in the field, this institute is the genesis and revelation".
Also, another student of National Diploma I, Bimbo Olanrewaju, "Although, I'm a starter but i must say that with the few months spent in the institute, both theory and practical classes, I'm certain of a bright future in the media world. I'm hopeful".
Inspite of all the appraisals, some students protested and stressed on the fact that few of their lecturers are not capable enough in handline some of their coursework which is a core course stating that it will not in anyway achieve their aim in those path of the profession.
A student, Akanbi Olayinka, said "there are some lecturers we have taking core courses in our second year who are not capable of taking them because their field of interest is different from the coursework they're handling".
Also, speaking with another student, Talabi Samuel, deduced that the institute needs to bring in more hands in tutoring the students as well as suggested some other media practice they must look into.
"I believe there is need to take on more practical broadcast classes because aside production, there is presentation of which we've not had any hint talk less of lectures on them, I believe that'll be a plus is included in the school's curricular".
The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page. Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world; those are words of a freedom fighter, An historic president of South Africa, Nelson Mandela. Educational oriented institute like NIJ is best for those whose talent is discovered and wants it nurtured.. Educational-Orientation is still very active and promising.
