The Nigerian Institute of Journalism has urged practicing
young journalists to embrace the new media as it is key to societal
development.
This was disclosed by the Provost of the institute, Gbemiga
Ogunleye in an interview with student-journalists on Tuesday.
He said,
“The future belongs to the younger generation and a youth who have
adapted the new media is going to succeed either in business or education. You have
to embrace the new media because that is where the cash is”
“If you look at the statistics, we have younger generation in the world
than we older men. The younger people whom I call the Facebook generation, most
of the things they’ve ever done, they have done it online”, he noted.
Ogunleye further stated that the institute with lot of projects
at hand as one major problem which is funding in achieving its desired standard
for the practice of the new media thus far.
He said,
“One major constraint that we are having is the availability of funds. There
are lot of things that we plan to do but funds have been a constraint”.
“We are toying with the idea of having a hotspot whereby certain hours
and areas of the school, students have internet access. We rely mainly on tuition
fees and you know how expensive fuel is and how inefficient PHCN is. Money we
should have spent on things within the school, we’ve deployed it to buy diesel
on a weekly basis. Having internet access on campus is not a problem but funds
have been a major constraint”.
